This is a rant about Harry Potter communities that nobody wants to read but I had to get out. It is full of spoilers, so please avoid at all costs if you haven't read the book.
The Sirius/Remus ship is going fucking nuts.
So Remus and Tonks get together at the end of HBP... so what! Is Remus Lupin not allowed to move on with his life after Sirius's death? It's really annoying me how everyone's going on about how it's the death of the 'ship, blah blah blah, how they're going to totally disregard canon because they hate it etc etc etc.
If I'd wrote the book would I have written it differently? Yes. But we all know that sadly we're not going to get gay romance in kids books and therefore there is a chance that our favourite characters that we like to slash will get paired with someone else. But seriously, it's not like it happened right in the middle of happy slash times... Sirius died in the last book and so apart from post death angst and Marauders-era fic there's not been a lot else going on.
What's people's problem about characters moving on? I don't class myself as a Remus/Tonks shipper but I don't get why it's supposed to be "the end" of everything. Big deal, so you get to think of him at least bisexual now instead of totally gay... but hello world, this is internet fanfiction... it's not going to shape the universe or anything.
Hell, I thought Remus/Tonks was less annoying than some of the other stupid ships made canon in HBP.
I guess I'm just pissed because I thought I'd write a fic bringing together past and present and showing how Remus was moving on from Sirius but still loved him and one of the comments I got was "Yaaaay...".
Sometimes I dunno why I bother... I enjoy writing and I can even take constructive crit but all this stupidity is pissing me off. Fandom's supposed to be fun, and people are taking it waaaay too seriously, and it's not fun right now.
If this is what writing around changable canon does to people, I'm only going to bother with completed works in future.

I have no problem with Remus moving on, but he basically appeared in the book to become Remus/Tonks. Same goes for Tonks
But we all know that sadly we're not going to get gay romance in kids books
Or even characters who aren't in the middle of heterosexual relationships. It's not like I was asking for him to be gay in canon, just not described in too much detail romantically.
Forget gay romance in particular--gay characters in general are not allowed in massively popular teen fiction. There is no room for us. We are not allowed. It's like the people who say that there are no gay characters in Trek because "it's the future" and stuff like that will be gone by then.
I completely agree with you on the last statement. Changeable canon is something I have learned I cannot handle, and it makes me wish even more that I had the ability to create my own characters and cut all this stuff loose.
And sorry if I responded a bit ascerbically, but I feel incredibly guilty about my negative feelings on this matter because I am surrounded by people who will think I am overreacting and lecture me if I even post one word about it.

If people had complained that Remus hadn't shown up enough in the book or whatever I'd understand... I was disappointed at his lack of role too, but for the most part they were acting like the fact that Remus and Tonks got together automatically sinks the ship... hell, if character death can't sink the R/S ship, nothing should. To be fair, there were plenty of people saying it shouldn't sink the ship, but IMO it's just not such a big deal.

Ugh... who says that? That's awful. >_<;;

Overreacting on HBP or lack of gay characters in fiction? I don't think you're overreacting on either.

Just ordering them made me feel a bit better.
